I understand a conference's desire to mix academics and athletics

but I am starting to wonder if that may be an antiquated model in the world of "big business" college athletics. Off the top of my head, I can't think of an example where 1 school refused to do academic business (including a collaborative effort) with another school simply because that school was in a different athletic conference.

I guess another reason I started to ask myself that question is because of the possibility that the power conferences could break away from the NCAA or form their own division level within the NCAA which could result in the power conferences adopting a pro model in terms of scheduling and organization. If the power schools opt for a pro model, then they may find there is really no need to have multiple conferences. Instead, they may opt to having 1 or 2 "conferences" like what we see in the pro leagues.
