I remember registering at the post office, but they hadn't drafted anyone..

...in years. But the selective service act was still active.

Never seriously thought about military service until I had a couple of former Naval Aviators at VT. Used to go out drinking beer, eating pizza, and hearing stories from one of them. I contacted the officer recruiting office in Richmond, and they set me up to take the test (in Roanoke?) and a physical in Richmond.

I got the call I was accepted on the day I drove home from VT. I had $20 to my name, put $10 in the tank and bought $10 worth of beer. Knocked it out when I got home, and my recruiter called. He said "you're in." He didn't think I sounded very excited, but I was actually half in the bag...lol My dad and I drove to Richmond a day or two later, and I was sworn into the US Navy. It took a year before I was finally issued a slot in AOCS, but my pay start date was about a hear ahead of the majority of my peers. That was nice when it came to "time in service" raises.

What an adventure!
