My thoughts ...


My son has been going to VT for football and basketball games his entire life. He has been wearing VT stuff his entire life and the man cave in my basement looks like a sports bar in Blacksburg. In short, he was brainwashed though that wasn't really our intention. He had also been to VT in all four seasons so dragging his ass across the drillfield in February wouldn't have made a difference.

When the time came for him to look at colleges, he naturally steered away from UVa, much to my pleasure. I always joked with him that I wouldn't pay for him to go to UVa but he knew it was a joke. He really based it on the 'VT kind of people and UVa kind of people' that Beamer always talked about and he clearly knew where he fit. His first love was Syracuse ... he wants to be a sports broadcaster and that is still the mecca of sports broadcasting schools. I took him on a full weekend visit there with a tour ... in September when it is still above freezing. He really liked it and I thought it was a real option on the long drive home.

Then he did the VT visit and Bill Roth spent two hours with him talking about both Syracuse and VT ... and Bill is a Syracuse alum. I swear not 5 minutes into the drive home, he said 'I want to go to Tech - it just feels like home'. So now he is a freshman at VT and loves it and I don't get grief from the Mrs when I want to go to VT - she usually just comes with me now.
