A couple of Linux questions

How fast of a machine do you need? The latest & greatest technology, or will a 10 year old MOBO/chip be sufficient?
(If it will run fine on older machines, I might build a new Window's machine and use my old hardware to build a Linux machine...something to learn on until I make the Linux transition.)

What type of "3rd party" software will it run? Basically asking about programs like Microsoft Office (for Windows). Do these programs run as efficiency as they do on a Window's machine?

Thanks!
