Stayed there a few times -- always on sites with water and electric. Once in a tent during a rainy weekend, every other trip since then in our hybrid travel trailer. A lot of the camping sites are pretty much adjacent to Route 60 and you have a good chance of experiencing a bit of noise from the road and impact from car headlights during the night if you get a site between the campground route and the road itself. If that's any kind of issue, the better camper sites are on the north side just down the road from the park office (although the bath house is also located there, so that might impact the level of solitude that you're looking at). To get really specific, I think sites #7 and #8 are probably the very best in terms of access to the beach and having a pretty decent degree of privacy.

IMO facilities are extremely well maintained overall. The beach is on the bay side, so it's pretty quiet and tranquil (my family liked that -- others may differ). Location is also pretty good for access down to the VB boardwalk area. Stayed there once for a sand soccer tournament and it was an excellent location for that purpose.

Overall it's a typical Virginia state park (which actually equates to a pretty high level of facility maintenance and service) that happens to be in a beach setting.
