I'd wager this is more and more true with each generation for a variety

of reasons.

My grandfather (born in Sweden in 1902ish) was more handy that my dad (born in Chicago in 1945), who was more handy than me (born in 1979) and I'll likely be more handy than my son (born in 2006). I try to show him some things but, regrettably, I'm at a stage where I loathe a home improvement project and I handle just the small stuff. Change out a bad garbage disposal, ceiling fans, drywall repair, fixing toilets, unclogging drains, etc. Hopefully those basic things my son and daughters too, on some level, will understand too, like, yes, where to shut off or own a circuit, how to turn off the main water, etc.

I'm not laying new floors or tiles because I know I would screw it up bad enough that you could tell it was DIY. I hire professional for that kind of stuff and, of course, mechanical failures that are above most of what I described above...

I find I'm middle of the pack with my friends. I have a couple buddies who have basically built their own additions on their homes and others who need my help to patch a hole in their wall.
