The Battle of Coral Sea frequently is viewed as a mere prelude to Midway

But check out the geography and realize its the water off the north/northeastern coast of Australia with the Solomons, New Guinea, Vanuatu and New Caladonia on the other side.

Thanks to the code breaking that let the US leaders know the intentions of the enemy, the Allied forces were able to check their advance.

Several books have been written recently telling of the time between Pearl Harbor and Midway in detail.

There was some amazing bravery, hard work, and good luck that set the table for the US victory at Midway.

While Coral Sea was scene as either a draw or Japanese victory (due to the US losing USS Lexington), there were several key consequences to the battle that would be crucial to our later victory. One, checking the Japanese advance; two, the removal of Shōkaku and Zuikaku from the Imperial Navy's carrier fleet, and three, the fact the halted Japanese invasion of Tulagi would later leave Guadalcanal vulnerable to US invasion.

The valor and straight out balls of the US military in responding in the months after Pearl Harbor are amazing. Coral Sea, with the competing carriers coming as close as 70 miles to each other; both the US and Imperial navy, steaming right for each other at full speed after launching their planes so they'd be closer for the next wave. Uncommon valor.
