they were heavily dependent on the US. Also a little empire never hurt. Went from samurai culture (say 1600ish in western terms) to fully modern society in 50 years. Pretty stunning what they can do when the culture turns its full attention in a agreed upon direction. Kept the essence of the samurai ethoes (duty, obedience, honoring authority etc.) but applied it in a very modern setting. Hardcore History has a really compelling podcast on the topic.
