Can you bring in a few bags of soil and plunk that down somewhere else?

I have neighbors that plant veggies all around their yard every summer. They'll have a tomato or squash plant between a couple of ornamental bushes in their back yard. Brilliant! If my back yard wasn't as shaded as it is, I would try the same thing.
