I seem to have the best luck with the flat plastic disk type with the .....

reservoir underneath. Easier to clean than the inverted bottle type. I make my own nectar; quarter cup of white sugar to one cup of warm water. No colorings or anything else added. The feeders I use have a red disk with feeding holes. I wash out and refill feeders when the reservoirs get low or I see debris in the water (dead ants, etc) which occasionally occurs. I have a plastic dome over my feeder that is out in the open to prevent dilution from rain and other birds perching on the stand arm from pooping on my hummingbird feeder. These little birds are a blast to watch.
