Got to hand it to my dad, he was amazing at this. I'm one that you really couldn't use a "hard sell" to get my attention. As a teenager, whenever someone pushed hard that I had to do one COA, that usually pushed me in the other direction. He knew exactly how to nudge me in the right direction.

One thing you need to remember is there is a transition point where your kid goes from you telling him what he must do, to where you're being more of a coach and mentor. Keep providing him a good role model. Keep nudging him in the right direction, and don't step in hard unless you absolutely have to...and don't make a habit of it for minor errors.

Like you said, he's off to college next year, so you won't be there to coach him along. Your job is to steer him in the right direction in the pond, and hope that he continues to paddle in that direction once he's out of sight. Keep nudging him in the right direction and hope what you've been telling him sticks...if not now, eventually.

That's where single parent homes are seriously hurting the next generation. I love my mom, but my dad was the guy who knew how to send me in the right direction my entire life. Was he perfect? Nope. No one is, but I wouldn't be the person I am without his love and direction.
