Lying is a deal-breaker for me regardless of the issue.

How can you deal with anyone, family, friend, coworker, who can look you in the face and lie to you? I cannot. And I have dropkicked people out of my life for that separate from what they did.

What of his are your paying for? Car? Insurance? Cell phone? Clothes? Food? Bedroom Furniture? We took care of the lying from our boys by age 4. Whatever they are doing, no lying about it.

It has served them well. They have faced a few difficult situations but because they have aquired a reputation for being truthful, they were believed.

It is beneath your son's dignity to lie and even more beneath yours to accept it. Have him own up to and be responsible for his own life instead of bailing him out.

You can certainly have a little fun making the point, where you are going to meet, what you are going to do or buy for him. Then be a no-show, 'Oh, I lied.' For as long as it takes until he gets it. And all of you decide no more lying. Only then can you have a real discussion of his problems.

Rule of thumb, do not exchange short term gain for long term pain. If he refuses to cooperate, tell him he's out when he turns 18. Find a job or pay for his own college.
