Only because the $$ is not there to be independent in basketball, etc


ND basketball was independent from when the program started up until it joined the Big East in 1995.

ND basketball was at it best as an independent in the Seventies. I recall those days fondly and wish it were still able to be a basketball independent.

It was a powerful program and made its only Final Four as an independent.

I think independents being forced to join conferences is not a good thing but the opposite.

Too bad ND basketball was not iconic enough to get a national TV contract and schedule well as an independent. Mores the pity. :)

P.S. If ND had won the game against Clemson, it would have been in the national title game.

Independence did not "limit" it there.

If ND had been in the ACC, went undefeated, won the Coastal and lost to Clemson in the title game, it would not even have been in the playoffs with one loss.

That seems more limiting.
