I think their specific complaint, when they get around to making it...


...is the supposed crowding out of medium-budget movies for adults. Like, you can make an art film, but it has to be made for no money. Or you can make a bid-budget movie, but it has to be a mega-production preferably based on existing IP.

But, as I talked about in a response above, the medium-budget movies *are* getting made! Damien Chazelle is making them. The Mexican directors are making them. Clint Eastwood makes one damn near every year. It's just that: a) Coppola is nowhere near the list of guys who can be trusted with anything more than a tiny budget right now and b) Scorsese's current project was a CGI-heavy movie with a nine-figure budget! The existence of Marvel Studios doesn't rank among the top 100 reasons why Coppola can't get financing and Scorsese went to Netflix.
