Like you, I did it in the winter, and our ductwork is in the crawlspace, so I didn't have to worry about air sealing at the same time. However, we have a low-pitch truss roof that really wasn't set up for attic access, and the truss webs make crawling around up there a nightmare. A prior homeowner had laid some 1/4" plywood down the center truss bay, but had never nailed it down or made sure the seams landed on the trusses...so it was dangerous as crap.

First I had to completely empty the attic. Then I ended up framing up a new 4' wide "floor" down the center bay using 2x10s (so that I could accommodate R-38 batts) turned on edge screwed to a flat 2x4 to form an "L" and anchored those to the truss bottom chords. Then I insulated between the 2x10s and covered them with 5/8" floor sheathing, that I had to rip into 24" wide lengths to be able to shoot them up the pull down attic access. Then I insulated the entire attic area using R-38 rolled batts, working off the new center platform that I built. From start to finish I think it took me 6-8 weekends, pretty much working all day both Saturday and Sunday. I was still in my 20s then, but it still took a toll on me. At this point, the thought of even attempting it is awful.
