Some Air Conditioner System questions for the lounge.

1. What time of year is the best time to buy/replace your A/C system? In terms of pricing and reliable contractor availability?
2. What are considered to be the 2 or 3 top brands? Energy efficiency and durability.
3. Our AC is original to the house, making it 24 years old at this point. It's working fine. Should we replace it sometime soon just so we do that under our control and not as a rush "Oh ship, it's in the 90's and we're sweltering without AC." issue? Or do we think to ourselves "If it's lasted 24 years, we got a good one. It could keep running well for a long time."
