I've heard good things about American Standard. I think it had the

highest reliability rating from Consumer Reports (would be based on subscriber surveys). I'm in a similar boat as you; i.e. I have an aging unit. One thing I've thought of is possibly sticking with a single stage compressor. You'd sacrifice efficiency, because I believe the high efficiency units rely on two stage compressors, so you'd give up something on reliability.
