I have had both eyes done.

My Doctor is not impressed with the variable focal length lens, said the only problems he had ever had were with that lens and refuses to use it now. I have heard others say they like it, but no one has ever raved about it. It is marketed as a Cadillac lens, I just didn't get a good vibe about it.

I had eyes corrected with slight mono-vision and absolutely love it. First eye was for distance and is/was great. About two years later the other cataract got bad enough and I discussed with Dr. - wanted to try and eliminate any contacts/glasses. So he stepped it in, but slightly farther than arms length focal length - little farther than normal reading length. With that "close" vision eye I can read almost everything I want without glasses. Very small print or very low light and I slap on a pair of readers - but very rarely - maybe once a month I run into something that I can't read.

This is one of the best decisions I ever made. Not having glasses/contacts of any kind is a dream come true.

If you have worn contacts, ask Dr. to prescribe a lens that will correct your eye to whatever close vision you would like to have with the new lens. Wear it a couple weeks to see if you can get your brain/eyes to adjust. Some people can't, but good to know beforehand. My Dr. wouldn't wouldn't do the mono vision surgery without someone going through this test.

Dr. also said (but I haven't done it yet) that he could prescribe a correction contact for my close vision eye for golf, football games etc. if I occasionally wanted both eyes for distance, but I haven't felt the need.

Good luck with whatever you choose.
