A while back when a hurricane passed through, I heard the sump pump in my

basement running almost continually and thought man, if the power goes out all my HVAC system will be flooded. I bought a 3KW Generac generator and wired an inlet plug to the outside of the house just serving the sump pump, put in a double throw switch to switch between house and generator and waited. Haven't ever used it. I fire up the generator once a year and run it for about an hour to keep it serviceable using fuel stabilizer and running the generator out of fuel each time. To me it's worth the peace of mind.
