Never talk to the collections people. Dispute directly with the creditor.

If you pay the collections agency it stays on your credit as a paid collection for years. Dispute it with the creditor and if legit pay it directly to them and demand they rescind the collections action. Has worked for me the couple of times small medical bills ended up getting missed because my local clinic's bookkeeping is beyond garbage. I once got a "first billing" from them over a year after the claimed services.
