A lot of companies have determined the cost of returning the item is higher after shipping, handling, recouping costs by selling used vs just refunding the item. Remember, you are likely to just turn around and spend that money with them again, either a replacement or something else. Either way, they are coming out ahead.

I had this happen on an order of 12 gauge ammo from Cabelas back in 1999, sent 3" rather than 2 3/4". They would have had to pay hazmat rates to take it back, which are very steep. They refunded my money and said keep the ammo. I didn't mention that I also had a 3" shotgun that I could use it in.
