Moving a home game to an NFL stadium is rubbish

If a school like Wake wants to cash in on a visit by Notre Dame by moving a game to Charlotte, that's their call. But it's a bad call. It's bad for the program, which has to play what amounts to a road game instead of a home game. It's bad for the school's students, who can't walk across campus for a great experience and probably have to pay an exorbitant price to even see the game. It's bad for the community, which has one less chance to sell hotel rooms, beer and dinners. And the additional revenue achieved from selling more tickets to the visitors and to idle fans who just want to see the Irish once is a drop in the bucket compared to television revenue, which will not change one iota.

Some of us are old enough to remember when Virginia Tech was so cash-strapped it moved a home game against Florida State to Orlando. That was a long time ago, when the revenue streams were much different than they are today. It's one thing to play a one-off neutral site game, as Tech has done with Southern Cal and Alabama, among others (usually to disappointing results). But it's quite another thing to take a game that is in a regular home-away rotation and move it out of your own stadium.

Better to play the game in your home stadium and jack up the prices, just like almost every program now does for all of its marquee home games.
