You are so right. Only conference champs should be in the CFP.

Expand the field to 8. Champs of the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and PAC plus the 3 highest ranked of the remaining conferences. You must be in a conference to play for the national championship. Such an arrangement would make the regular season absolutely awesome and the conference championship games even more awesome. Remember when the ACC only allowed its conference champ in basketball to go to the NCAA tournament? Remember the absolute mind blowing tension and thrill created by those games? College football could do the same.
