Transportation probably....

was a consideration and what you relay is accurate. However, the split was driven by the success of the SEC, a split off of former SoCon members and the disagreement over post season bowl play. VT made the wrong choice as did UVA originally but, the Hoos were smart and came to their senses quickly. VT delayed until it was too late. A decision they spent the next 50 years trying to overcome.
