I think it depends on the math


Football weekends generate a lot of revenue for local businesses and the school. And for schools in more rural locations (like VT) compared to urban schools (like Ohio St), there are not easy ways to replace that revenue.

So the academic side may want a certain direction, but there are a lot of factors to consider.
- Cost to the school each year
- Impact to direct revenues (school and community) if you do vs. if you don't
- Media contracts if you do vs. if you don't
- Impacts to college marketing, admissions, alumni donations (there is some connectivity with sports)
