OK - if I am college football king for a day - here is what I would do

1. Expand Alliance to Big 12 or the Big 12 schools that want to be a part of it.
2. Rip the band aid of as quickly as possible and get to the bifurcation that is coming ASAP.
3. Take the top 50-60 schools that don’t want to be semi pro (think the VT’s of the world) and the top 30-40 of the next tier down (think the UCF, Cinci, WF of the world) and come up with (4-6) Div 1 conferences and (4-6) Div 2 conferences. This is the New College Football Alliance Association (CFAA). Think Div 1 NE Conference, Div 2 NE Conference – Div 1 SE Conference, Div 2 SE conference; and so on…..
4. The CFAA negotiates 1 TV contract for all CFAA sports. Div 1 teams get 65% of the contract and Div 2 teams get 35% of the contract value.
5. Teams can move up from NE Div 2 to NE Div 1, and they can move down – think EPL Model. This creates excitement at both the bottom level of Div 1 and the top level of Div 2 – AND makes every game count. The bottom 2 or 3 from Div 1 get relegated and the top 2-3 from Div2 move up. You could also go with something like Director Cup standings if you wanted the move to be for all sports vs just a singular sport. You could also tie in things like average home game attendance, etc if you wanted to get crazy with the criteria but I would keep it simple and go with results on the field – helps the average fan to understand and get excited about their team’s performance.
6. True enforcement of the rules with an enforcement arm that has investigative authority – whatever the rules are, everyone needs to feel confident that they are true and enforceable, equally for all.
7. To show that the CFAA is truly committed to the student ath. (unlike the semi pro group), all sports ath. are paid a generous stipend – regardless of sport and sex, and it is the same at all schools (i.e none of that BS with true cost of attendance), minimal standards for academic support, etc. THIS is what makes the CFAA different – make it real and market the heck out of it.

I could go on-and-on, but you get the point. Lots of details would need to be worked out and agreed upon. But I think the first and immediate action is to get to the upcoming bifurcation quickly and the Alliance needs to have a blue print and idea for moving forward – other than we are just the amateurs and the other guys are the semi-pros – if that is the model than you might as well put a nail in the coffin. I honestly think that the “amateur” league if done properly could be a heck of a lot better than what we have today.
