It's really old advice, but it was good then

I think this was either Ann Landers or Dear Abby's advice for parenting a new driver. Write up an honest-to-goodness contract that you walk through with them and sign.

There is just something about crystal clear expectation and agreed responsibilities that can prevent hassles down the road.
