Question about safe driving/monitoring apps

So...USAA has an app similar to some of the other companies that will give you a substantial discount if you're a "good driver". Also looking as some of the parent/teen driver apps that track teen driving habits (among other features).

One question I have is this...

Many of the apps claim to be able to tell if the user is driving or a passenger. How does the app determine this?
