It is purely a CYA move by ESPN. ESPN knows that the public believes


ESPN has great influence on how the Playoff Committee votes in the weekly poll. ESPN knows that if Cincy goes undefeated and gets left out of the Playoffs, then it will face a huge backlash from the public and probably lose whatever credibility it has left in the process. ESPN can't afford to have that happen because it has "plans" for the College Football Playoffs.
If Cincy happens to lose and Wake ends up being the only undefeated team on the outside, then look for ESPN to hype Wake hard for the same reason.
