Right now ND has to go undefeated to go to the CFP.

I believe it would be easier to win a conference championship than go undefeated. Winning a conference will get you in the playoffs more often than not.

So while a 100 conference members have not won a championship, they have a better chance - albeit small - because of their conference affiliation.

I would also add that winning the ACC is much easier than the SEC or BIG and about the same as the PAC and BIG 12.
