Short answer: Lack of PTO, Long answer: American culture...
We badly need to provide every worker with paid time off. That means every white collar employee (most of whom do receive at least a week of PTO) and every blue collar employee (many of whom receive little to no PTO).
We also need to foster a culture where people can stay home when they're sick. If you are sick and your team is short-staffed that is not your fault. Your company and your management chose not to staff your department appropriately to cover absences because it's cheaper to have a staff shortage and make people work harder than it is to fund additional full-time (or part-time) positions.
If I were God Emperor of America, I'd make five weeks of PTO mandatory for all full-time employees and provide a prorated amount of PTO for part-time employees (based on their averaged hours worked). It's far past time that we join the rest of the civilized world and start treating workers like what they are... human beings.
