Not sure if I qualify as a basketball guru, but...


Every coach practices breaking the press. However, practice is typically the starters playing against the 2nd team. If you have a deep team like Duke then breaking the press in practice may be tougher than many opponents. With a team like VT, there is no way to simulate the size and speed the team will face against a good team. Basically, things that work in practice don't work in the game until the starters "catch up" to the speed of the competition.

What I see in the VT players are mental breakdowns that come from lapses in concentration and not doing what they have been coached to do. This happens when someone is under pressure. It sounds crazy, but if I were the coach I would try practicing 6 on 5 so the starters will feel pressure in practice that's more like what they are feeling in the game.
