The scandal didn't break out until the Summer 2003 after the

murder of Patrick Dennehy. During the NCAA's investigation, information came out that Bliss had committed violations while at SMU during the period of 1980-1988 when both schools were a member of the SWC. Baylor completed its internal investigation on February 26, 2004.

The NCAA didn't complete its investigation and impose its penalties until June 23, 2005. What makes the NCAA report even more interesting is "the NCAA called the violations at Baylor as serious as those which occurred at SMU almost 20 years earlier." However, the NCAA opted not to give Baylor men's basketball team the death penalty. Also, keep in mind that one of the penalties was that the university was on probation until June 22, 2010. Even though the incident occurred over 10 years ago, the university is less than 6 years removed from coming off probation.
