As long as cable technology holds sway, conferences have a powerful incentive to expand in states outside their existing footprints. Hence Syracuse to the ACC, Texas A&M to the SEC, Rutgers to the B1G.
Take away cable carriage as a priority concern and expansion within the existing footprint suddenly becomes more appealing. One is not now seeking markets so much as entertaining matchups. It now pays to look first at nearby schools that generate viewer interest while keeping travel costs low for athletes and fans.
Shift the technology and you shift the expansion priorities. That's as true for the SEC as for any other league.
