What you probably do not know is the position just filled
will spend a lot of time answering Freedom of Information (FOI) requests regarding the Athletic Dept finances. These requests originate from the press and general public and, since VT is a public institution, the responses are required to be provided on a reasonably timely basis. I know the person who was replaced, and know that she spent a lot of time responding to these requests in addition to managing the financial operations. So, there is a lot more to this position than most folks would know.
I do not believe we have an inflated payroll to manage the athletic department's finances and budgets. There are a lot of financial activities which require competent and hard working people to manage. This new position was not created - the person who had the job before transferred to another department in the university. The fact that the position became open is a little concerning to me, but each athletic director has his/her own management and operating methods and requirements, and changes occur because of that.
