Not a study, but just from personal experience, I do find talking on the


phone through my car's bluetooth connection to be more distracting than talking to someone in the car.

Over the bluetooth, it is basically like talking on a speakerphone. So I need to listen far more intently to understand the conversation than I do when talking to someone who is in the car. Also need to speak loudly, slowly, and enunciate very clearly when talking so the person on the phone can understand.

These sound like tiny little things, but they do require a bit of extra brainpower that has to be pulled away from driving. If I'm just driving down the highway, its no big deal. But in heavy traffic, I do find a hands-free phone call to be a bit distracting.
