One idea I kinda like is that instead of suspending a license, restrict it

if you get a DUI, you are free to drive, but only motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds.

This country is extremely car-centric when it comes to transportation. There are an awful lot of places outside the big cities where if you can't drive, you can't go to work, the grocery store, get the kids to school, or do much of anything. The suburban and rural parts of this country are so spread out you can't walk to where you need to go, and are generally not well served by public transit.

If you wonder why people drive on a suspended license, in many cases they probably feel they have no choice. If they don't drive, they lose their job.

So let 'em drive, just restrict their choices to vehicles where the only person they can reasonably hurt is themselves. If the idea of driving a motorcycle while drunk doesn't terrify you into never doing it, then you probably deserve to be street pizza.

Got that idea from someone who worked in a prosecutor's office after seeing case-after-case of repeat DUI offenders. The court tells them they can't drive, but then society gives them no other option for going about their life.
