It's a strange dynamic.


In CFB, consistently selling out your stadium and having a sizable, motivated fanbase is more important than (i.e. more valuable than) winning games. The problem is you can't sustain the fanbase or the brand if you don't put a compelling product on the field and win occasionally.

That's why Duke, Wake, and BC fielding quality teams is nice (and well they should if they want to keep cashing checks from the ACC media rights which are 80% football). But it's the bare minimum that should be expected of them. And it's much less valuable to the conference (and therefore VT) than Pitt, UVa, UNC, Syracuse, NC State, and Miami improving their football brand and growing their fanbase.
