The thing about non-competes is the employer has to want to
do something about it. If you go to work in the same industry and start taking customers or employees that will prompt them to enforce it. If you go to work and they never even know where you went to work and have nothing to do with the former employer it is not worth it for them to enforce it. In other words go to work for whoever you want to but don't announce it or anything and do not have anything to do with the former employer and you will be fine most likely.
One of my former employers had a non-compete on everyone at the company. And the owner loved lawyers but he never enforced the non-compete but if a former sales person for instance tried to take a current client, he would ring up the lawyer.
