As far as I know the Arizona Cardinals is the only team in the US that I know of who has a retractable pitch. However, at that stadium the entire pitch is capable of moving outside the stadium through the one end. I found this YouTube clip which shows the mechanics of it. I am assuming the Cardinals use the same technology, but don't have the field divided up into 3 sections.

What is going to be interesting to see is if the rails, supposed hidden beneath the American football field, will have any impact (i.e. injuries, divots, etc) on either game. If there are no "hiccups" with the technology (i.e. the soccer pitch moves suddenly during a game), then this technology could be the wave of the future. Instead of building sports specific venues, then multiple purpose venues could come back into en vogue and potentially save taxpayers money.
