Great story. Thanks.I bet parents would never allow sledding there now.

Same as the (thinking back) street we sledded on in my neighborhood. And we did it without parent supervision too.

My mother is a stoic, never complains about pain, and never gave much sympathy to any complaints of uncomfort that I might have.

After one major snowfall that we had, my entire neighborhood of kids were out sledding on the street - a huge hill on a narrow road. It was dark out and we'd have to watch for cars, and dozens of kids would yell "CAR!" and we'd pick up our sleds, stand on the side of the road and give the driver the stink eye as they drove past because they were interrupting and ruining our track.

Of course there were no parents around and so it was a free for all, with metal sleds and metal saucers flying around and occasionally running into each other. In one pile up I hit my head and when I reached up ("OW!") I saw a few drops of blood on my mitten. I was horrified. "i'm injured! I have to go home!" The kids that noticed, "OK, bye!" and went back to their sledding.

I trudged the three blocks home in the dark thinking OMG I'm dying - I need mom! I finally walked in the door, went directly to the kitchen where mom was cooking dinner. "MOM! (tearing up) I hit my head when sledding and it's BLEEDING!"

She takes a look at my head and says, "yes, there is some blood there, oh my" and immediately gets some items out of the cupboard, and makes a little paste in a bowl. I'm thinking, "mom always knows what to do - she's making a poultice to put on my stinging cut",

Mom set the cup down in front of me and then turned to get something. I stuck my fingers in the cup, got a little bit of the paste and put it on the cut on my head. She turns back around, "What are you doing?" I say, "I'm putting the poultice you made on my cut." She laughs and says - "i'm making gravy, that was my slurry". Then she picked up what was left in the cup and threw it in the pan.

My mother couldn't even slow down to give me sympathy and help clean up my cut. The roast with the gravy had to get on the table! Oh well, we were all sitting at the table eating dinner in about 15 minutes.

Can you imagine parents sending their kids out to sled on a street in the dark now? Nope. Probably rightly so though. Hard to believe that people my age are still alive what with little parent supervision, no bike helmets, no protective gear with sports etc.
