Not all politicians were farmers though

Some were businessmen, lawyers, tax collectors, engineers, or any other profession you want to consider. You could even say some decided to become professional politicians (i.e. John Adams, John Q. Adams, Sam Adams, etc.) when including the time spent in a Cabinet position, as a diplomat, and at the state government level.
