For those that have an IT career, I have a question.

I have been involved in an Operations capacity for over 20 years along with Asset Management. I am intrigued with computer language and have started learning some basic Python recently on my own time. My question is, if I sufficiently learn Python, will or could it be helpful in an IT environment if I wanted to tweak my career path? Or, will most organizations discount that knowledge if self taught?
