Maybe he didn't have much upper body strength to push the seat

over plus his own body weight. It is even possible that 1 or both arms were trapped/pinned somehow which would only make it that much more difficult to push the seat and his body weight back over. If 1 or both arms were free, then only possibility I can think of is that he didn't have a good angle to have the proper leverage to push the seat and his body weight over.

I don't know exactly how the backseat looks in that particular model, but my mom had a 1986 Dodge Caravan minivan when I was in high school. Even though the backseat is smaller the middle seat, it was 1 piece and still heavy (required 2 people to carry it when taking out). I would like to think that I was stronger than most kids my age and I could see a scenario where I would have trouble pushing the seat upright if I happened to get pinned against the trunk door. The only way I could probably free myself is by reaching the latch on the inside of the door to free the trunk door enough so my bodyweight could force me out through the back.
