It is the same for most sports....


defense/pitching can ultimately win you championships, however, there has to be some balance because there is always going to come those one or few contests where you actually have to outscore somebody. That flaw, lack of balance, tends to show up more in tourney situations, particularly those of a single loss format or even a series format where the opponent is a challenging matchup. Law of averages says the more ways you are competent and capable of winning a game the more you are likely to win.
