Yes, I can think of 1 scenario where a conference may decide to reduce

the number of conference games while expanding its total membership. However, in order for the scenario to work, a couple of assumptions have to be made.

1. The plan is for the creation of 4-5 super conferences with 16-20 members in each.
2. The super conferences have to been working together from a media rights standpoint.
3. The super conferences have to create enough separation from the rest of the group to minimize any threat of political pressure in the event they leave to form a new association or division level.
4. Once the super conferences form the new whatever, they break up into smaller (regional?) conferences.
5. The new whatever pool their resources together for the media rights to where it looks like pre-1984 NCAA or any of the current pro models.

By reducing the number of cross-division games to 1, then it will make it easier for the 2 divisions to eventually split and form 2 conferences because they don't have a strong connection with each other. They are willing to go this route because everyone makes more money in the long run than under the competition model and shifting back to the regional conference model allows them to maximize regional rivalries. Also, it could potentially increase the exposure for all the members because any member could have its game televised on any network willing to do business with the new whatever. I guess it is even possible the various conference networks could be merged into 1 entity.
