Probably the best "bang for the buck" is a used bike

You can save a lot of cash from the people who either upgrade to a nicer bike, or have gotten to the point where they just don't have the time to ride.

But on the other hand, have you thought about upgrading your current bike? Treks are generally good bikes, and would probably be worth upgrading. Upgrading to better brakes is a lot cheaper than buying another bicycle.

Make a list of everything you want to upgrade, shop for the parts, then see if it's worth it to you to upgrade. The reason I suggest this is what you said it's intended purpose. If you're not hitting hard/technical trails, then you don't need the latest & greatest mountain bike technology. Heck, my Specialized M2FS is 22 years old, and I still ride it on trails. The only downside is the fork. I could upgrade to a better fork, but my frame probably can't take anything more than 80mm without damage...so I'm refurbishing the Judy that came on it.
