That's probably because he attended WVU instead of VT ;-)
My point is just because someone has not heard of a NBA player doesn't necessarily mean MJ was the first NBAer to build a brand. I do think MJ was the first NBAer to be monetarily successful (aka in the millions) with his brand. I am just not sure he was the first when you consider all the super stars that played in the NBA and ABA (i.e. Julius "Dr. J" Erving, George "Ice Man" Gervin, Moses Malone, David "Skywalker" Thompson, Spencer Haywood, George McGinnis, etc) prior to MJ's arrival in the NBA.
For the record I am going to be 42 in July and grew up watching the NBA during the 80s and 90s. I have heard of NBAers and ABAers that played the game before I was born. Heck the first time I heard Jerry West's name was when he was the GM of the Lakers.
