Tips for a Tech applicant

Wondering if anyone could provide any guidance for a Dad of a kid who wants to go to Tech.

My son is finishing his junior year of high school. We live in Central Virginia and Tech is by far his first choice. But, I would say his scores don't make him a certainty. Is there any advice anyone can give as to what would make his chances better? Apply early? Apply to a particular school or apply general admission? Corp of Cadets? ACT or SAT?

He is working on improving his SAT score and I have confidence he will get it to 1300 or better but would appreciate any thoughts anyone might have. You know, other than bribing a non-rev coach to put him on the team. I hear that's frowned upon now.
