I gave up on the progressive bifocals

I went back to Costco to inquire, carrying my PowerPoint sheet showing the zones of vision and asked if something was off, since at least 4/9ths of my lenses were out of focus. I was told that's the way they were supposed to be. I told them it was unacceptable, and I'm having them install single vision lenses. My near vision isn't off that far, and would much rather be able to use 100% of my lenses for distance vision and look under for near items than lose almost half of my lens area going with bifocals.

To describe what I was seeing with the bifocals, it's probably best if I describe it in horizontal thirds:

The top third of the glasses were in focus for distant vision from edge to edge. Perfect!

As for the "middle third," the only part that was in focus was the 20-25% in the center, and that was for distance vision. If I looked off axis ~10-12% left or right my vision went out of focus (progressively).

The bottom third was similar to the middle third, except only the middle 20-25% was in focus for near vision.

Basically the outer sections of the middle and lower zones of my glasses were out of focus for both near and distance vision. I consider that the "unusable zone," and having that much of the lens useless was unacceptable.

Now I could live with the top two thirds being in focus from edge to edge (and just lose the lower two corners), but there is no way I can live with what they offered me.

Question for progressive bifocal users, are you seeing the same thing I described?
